To distinguish the type of liquid is a difficult problem.Conventional testing techniques will fail in this case as the liquid is stored in different containers. To analyze the energy spectrum of X-ray makes is possible to distinguish liquid in containers with X-ray transmission technique. This thesis discusses the substance distinction method based on X-ray energy spectrum. We focus on unpackaged substances and liquid with containers.Firstly,we use X-ray energy spectrum of an object to design the substance distinction algorithm based on X-ray attenuation law and X-ray attenuation coefficient model. For the distinction of substance with a container, the physical properties of the container is needed. Then,we use the photon counting detector to collect X-ray source energy spectrum and X-ray energy spectrum behind the object. We calculate the relationship between the effective atomic number and density of the object based on the designed algorithm, and we use it as a basis for substance distinction. At last,we compare the experimental results with the theoretical values of different substances to verify the rationality and practicality of the distinction method. In the experiment of unpackaged substance distinction, three types of substance are chosen. They are solid substance, organic liquid and inorganic liquid. The distinction method for unpackaged substance is verified through the results in this experiment. For the distinction of substance with containers, plastics, glass and aluminum are chosen as the containers, several types of organic and inorganic liquid are chosen as the detected objects.Through the experiment results, the distinction method for substance with containers is verified.Through the analysis of experiment results, the substance distinction method proposed in this thesis is to proven to be effective.
