The natural conditions are relatively complex and the climatic conditions are signifricantly different in northwest China,which caused the inadequacy of the water resources.In addition,the serious soil erosion leads to high sediment content in the river,which makes water more scarce in the northwest arid region.Therefore,it is urgent to build reservoir projects to ensure the rational allocation of water resources.This paper taked Tingkou reservoir with heavily sediment laden in northwest area of China as the research object,based on the interaction process between reverse regulator and Tingkou reservoir,and considering the water demands of the objects for water supply in different development periods since Tingkou reservoir,the reasonable regulation of water and sediment since Tingkou reservoir was determined to correspond with the water demand of the objects for water supply.Under the premise that the water supply efficiency of Tingkou reservoir was satisfied to the maximum extent,and the deposition in the reservoir area was reduced as far as possible,which provides technical support for the operation and management of Tingkou reservoir be in operation.It is also a practical theoretical research and exploration for the reservoir on the river with the overload flow.The main work was summarized as followings:(1)The short-term water and sediment conditions of Tingkou reservoir was determined.Considering the influence of two reservoirs to be built in upstream Gansu province,according to the analysis results of water and sediment characteristics obtained by mathematical statistics method,the series of short-term runoff and sediment after Tingkou reservoir putting into operation were determined.At the same time,considering the influence of sediment discharge limit,the water and sediment dispatching situation were developed.(2)The interaction between the reverse regulator and Tingkou reservoir was revealed.Based on the premise of maximum benefit,the principle of which Tingkou reservoir has priority in supplying water and reverse regulating reservoir assists to supply water was followed By analyzing the restricted conditions of Tingkou reservoir in many ways,the mutual feedbackbetween the reverse regulator and Tingkou reservoir was further revealed(3)The model of water and sediment regulation of Tingkou reservoir was established with the role of the reverse regulator.The model includes hydro-sediment dynamics model and hydro-sediment optimal allocation model.Based on the interaction between the reverse regulator and Tingkou reservoir,the changing process of scour and deposition and the process of storing and supplying water of Tingkou reservoir,and the process of water discharge and filling for the reverse regulating reservoir under different conditions of water and silt had been given.(4)The reasonable regulation of water and sediment for the initial operation of Tingkou reservoir was determined.With the short-term representative series of water and sediment data for Tingkou reservoir as the basic conditions,and considering the water demands of the objects for water supply in different development periods since Tingkou reservoir and the various limited conditions of Tingkou reservoir,so as to determine the reasonable regulation of water and sediment for Tingkou reservoir be in harmony with the demand of the objects of water supply.
