Taiyuan Region is located in the central part of Shanxi Province and the north of Taiyuan basin, which sits in the central part of the Yellow River basin in North China. As the capital of Shanxi Province, known as China’s energy base,Taiyuan Region is surrounded by mountains on the West,North and East sides. The long geological history has created numerous geoheritage resources.Based on the comprehensive geoheritage investigation, classification, analysis and evaluation, this thesis proposes the suggestions on the geoheritage protection and utilization in the study area, which could provide technical support for the establishment of potential geoparks and better development of geotourism in Taiyuan Region. On the basis of the data collection and field investigation, the geoheritage resources in the study area could be categorized into 2 main categories,8 categories and 14 subcategories, including 14 geosites dominated by basic geology,46 geosites dominated by geomorphological and landscape. The geosites are widely distributed in the whole study area, and some counties or cities are relatively abundant;generally, the geosites in mountainous and river valley areas and the old strata are rich, but rare in inner basin and the new strata.Through the single factor and comprehensive evaluation on the geoheritage in the study area, this paper considers there are 8 national,17 provincial and 35 regional geosites.According to the geoheritage grade and their distribution, this paper gives a reasonable proposal for geoheritage protection and utilization. It is suggested that 2 geoparks would be possible to build,3 key protection geosites and 9 common protection geosites are proposed.
