Synthesized Assessment Of Laboratory Primate Breeding Industry In China From 1995 To 2015

Primates are highly homologues with human genetic material,and are internationally used as a strategic resource for many countries for reserves and scientific research.Laboratory primate breeding industry had developed since the 1950s in China and now China has become the main export country for laboratory primates.However,there are still many problems in the development process,and it is urgent to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the laboratory primate breeding industry in China.In this paper,rhesus macaque(Macaca mulatta)and crab-eating macaque(Macaca fascicularis)are selected as research objects,we analyzed the development trend of the laboratory primate breeding industry in China in the past 20 years by using the historical data of 34 breeding enterprises,provided by the Chinese Laboratory Primate Breeding Development Association in 1995-2015,including the amount in captive,sales,and limits and prices,etc.At the same time,SCP framework analysis method was used to assess the industrial organization of primate breeding in China.In addition,on the basis of the demand and trade volume of experiment primates,the number of poaching and illegal smuggling over past years,and the number of wild populations,we analyzed the relationship between laboratory primate breeding and wildlife conservation in China.Research shows that with the development of the laboratory primate breeding,the amount in captive,sales volume,quota,and price are generally on the rise.However,due to the impact of the financial crisis and extreme animal protection organizations,sales volume had declined significantly in 2010-2011.In addition,the quota has an effect on improvement of the products quality and promotion of prices.The research also shows that China's laboratory primate breeding industry is a"moderately concentrated and non-occupied" market,small and medium-sized enterprises occupying the majority and the enterprises' entry barriers are strong.The market presents monopolistic and competition coexistence.In order to curb vicious competition in the industry,the policy of quotas and minimum prices is implemented to protect the development of the industry and to protect the profits of business operators.All companies improved their competitiveness for higher products prices by obtaining qualification certification.However,there is still a gap between the industry standards for primate breeding in China and the international.It is urgent to establish national standards and achieve mutual recognition with the international community.Through the evaluation of the ecological benefits of the laboratory primate breeding industry,it can be seen that the number of artificial primates and wild primates was significantly negatively correlated.After the publication of No.124(2004)document,with the development of artificial breeding of laboratory primates,the number of poaching and has gradually decreased,and has played an important role in the international demand for laboratory primates,reducing the number of wild monkeys captured internationally.This paper shows that after the standardized management,breeding has an effect on the wildlife conservation...
