The Impact Of Industry-University-Research Institute Cooperation Patterns On Firm Innovation Performance

Recently,with the rapid development of science and technology,knowledge economy and internet information,product life cycle is shortening,the complexity and the risk of technological innovation are increasing.Firms rely on their own research and development resources have been unable to keep pace with the times.But cooperation with universities and research institutes could share risk and resource,complementary advantages and promote firm's R&D rate.With the increase in the number of innovation and cooperation in the industry-university-research institute(I-U-R)cooperation,the cooperation pattern gradually changes from linear to network.Knowledge and information technology can transferring and communication by the I-U-R cooperation network.Improving the cooperation breadth that will facilitate firms to learn cross-level interdisciplinary heterogeneity knowledge,rich knowledge access channels and broaden the types of knowledge sources.The depth of cooperation will promote both sides to form a tacit understanding and cooperation inertia,strengthen the trust,build lasting trust relationship,and promotes the transfer of hidden knowledge.In this context,this article use network as a carrier of knowledge transfer and knowledge flow,learn from the theory of open innovation,from cooperation breadth and depth to measure the influence of different cooperation pattern to the firm innovation performance that will have important theoretical and practical value.This article selected Chinese ICT industry as research object,taken co-applied patents during 1996 to 2010 granted in Chinese Intellectual Property Office as the sample.Constructed I-U-R cooperation innovation network and extracted the subnetwork.Computed network structure index and build panel data.Then,we examined the influence of three cooperation patterns that firm and firm,firm and university,firm and research institute on firm innovation performance by binomial regression model from cooperation breadth and depth.The empirical results following those conclusions:firm and university cooperation are beneficial to improve firm innovation performance in current and one year lag from cooperation breadth perspective;Firm and firm cooperation pattern,firm and university cooperation pattern have significant influence on firm innovation performance from cooperation depth perspective;And the cooperation pattern between firm and research institutes has no significant effect on firm innovation performance both from breadth and depth.Finally,according to the results of empirical analysis,we provide some advices for policy makers to formulate relevant policies.
