Land resource is the basis of survival and development for human. Since the birth of human, land use and social metabolism has been an inseparable relationship. From the long term point of view, metabolic activity in cities change is often accompanied by a variety of land-use changes over time, these changes will affect the interaction between human society and its surrounding biophysical environment, so is one of the interference on earth system caused by human beings. Wuhan city, located in the central region of China, is one of the fastest growing cities, also an important strategic pivot to achieve the rise of central china. In recent years, land use in Wuhan city showed a high-density characteristics, urban construction land keep on increasing, land use structure constantly adjusts, land use spatial patterns are becoming increasingly compact and concentrated, also the population supporting capacity, material bearing strength and the economic output intensity of land continuously strengthen, these all show a significant high-density characteristics. In the urbanization process, land use change along with the rapid transformation of socio-economic system metabolism is the basic features. In reference to Cui Xuezhu study about the city land use and metabolic effect, selecting Wuhan as the study area, research the driving effects of land use change on urban material metabolism according to the land use trends and material metabolic process in Wuhan.Firstly, the study selects the dynamic degree of land use and characteristics of land use pattern change to quantify the land use change tendency in Wuhan in 2000~2011 based on expounding some concepts and related theories such as metabolism. Reveal the characteristics and problems of land use by measuring the diversity of land use types, dynamic degree of land use change, space combination rate of land use and uniformity of land use pattern in Wuhan.Next, start from the perspective of material metabolism, form the accounting boundaries, logical framework and index system to carry out a specific accounting about 2000~2011 material metabolism in Wuhan, so as to provide methods and technical support for the discussion about the relationship among land use, ecological environment, economic growth and social development in Wuhan.Lastly, based on specific accounting about Wuhan metabolism, the study selects the gray correlation degree model to explore the causing relationship between land use change and urban metabolism in Wuhan, then applies the SPSS17.0 software to analysis the results of Pearson test, which found that land use structure change has a dominant driving effect on the change of urban material metabolism, then choose the metabolism efficiency improving as the starting point, suggestions about optimizing land use structure and regulating the land use pattern of Wuhan city are put forward.
