The scope of plasmonics is to study the optical properties of the surface plasmons polaritons(SPPs)in metal surfaces.Plasmonics developed rapidly in recent years and showed great prospects in various disciplines including biology,chemistry,and information.Comparing to the SPP which featured quality factor is 1-40,the quality factor of surface phonon polaritons(SPhPs)is about 40-135,exceeding the theoretical limit value of SPPs.In this thesis,we numerically study the excitation conditions of SPhPs via one-dimensional grating and two-dimensional photonic crystals at first.Then,through arranged polystyrene microspheres on the surface of the 4H-silicon carbide(4H-Si C),we experimentally excite the SPhP resonances in the Reststrahlen band of 4H-SiC.Compared with the traditional methods of the SPhP excitation,our approach avoids to destroy the surface crystal lattice of 4H-SiC and therefore strong SPhP is easier to excite.The excited SPhP has long lifetime and high quality factor.There are five chapters in this thesis.The first chapter introduces the optical properties of SPP,and emphasizes bottleneck factors of the SPP device.The second chapter theoretically shows the means of the SPhP excitation.We find that making periodic structures at the surface of 4H-SiC helps to excite the SPhPs,in analogous with the excitation of SPP.The third chapter,we introduces the fabrication of amorphous silicon carbide by PECVD.The aim of fabricating amorphous silicon carbide is to verify the importance of high quality arrangements of the lattices in silicon carbide plays a crucial role on the excitation of the SPhPs.The results show that only the low doping crystalline SiC support the excitation of SPhPs.In the fourth chapter,we introduces the self-assembly of the monodisperse polystyrene(PS)microspheres on SiC.With the two-dimensional array of PS spheres,the SPhPs is excited in 4H-SiC.Finally,we made a summary in the fifth chapter.We concludes that the way ofthe surface phonon polaritons excitation is effective and may provide helpful in the high-performance optoelectronic devices in the future.
