The Orbis Sensualium Pictus,an encyclopedic literacy textbook for children,was a masterpiece of Czech famous educationist Johann Amos Comenius in the 17 th century.One of its specialties is the organic combination of pictures and the content,making the pictures as another way to explain the meaning of words,which redefined the children' s literacy textbook.Picture-illustrated Literacy Textbook of Chengzhong Elementary School appeared in the background of the education reform in the late Qing Dynasty.The encyclopedic literacy textbook was compiled by Chengzhong Elementary School,which was led by Liu Shuping.The book not only retains the knowledge of Chinese traditional culture,but introduces large quantities of advanced western scientific knowledge,combining the knowledge with a great deal of fine pictures.Thus,some common points will be found and some differences will be better understood by a comparison research.The unique specialties of Chinese literacy textbook will also be deeply discussed.This dissertation falls into 5 chapters.Chapter 1 is introduction,which introduces the reason for the title,the significance and the means of the research,literature review etc.Chapter 2 is the comparison on the compiling concept.It is discovered that both books all highlight the practicability and the universality of knowledge,but the content of the textbook of Chengzhong is more difficult.Chapter 3 is the comparison on the structure of the textbooks.They are mainly compared from macroscopic structure and microscopic structure.Chapter 4 is the comparison on the content of the textbook.The knowledge in the books are divided into language knowledge,scientific knowledge,social knowledge and moral knowledge.The comparison is made from these 4 parts.Chapter 5 is conclusion and suggestion.According to the research,it is concluded that the structures of both show inheritance and creature with respective features;the universality of knowledge is related with the similar social background;the difference on depths of the content is related to the respective education goal and tradition.Suggestions based on the research are that the rationality of pictures should be paid attention,the newest techniques and the auxiliary function of the learning tools should be highlighted when compiling literacy textbooks and,meanwhile,the traditional culture should be carefully selected as well.
