Reading pedagogy plays a significant role in English teaching,students,exposed more to English with the help of reading,will gain more related knowledge as a sense of language and the ability of reading comprehension grow.English Curricular Standards in the Phase of Compulsory Education,an authorized English teaching syllabus,has set a clear standard for English reading in the phase of primary school,as well as for the amount of extracurricular reading and reading skills in the phase of secondary school.Outside class English reading is necessary because it helps connected both phase well,and accords to the nature of English learning,but study on outside class English reading in primary school phase is scarce and premature.Taking advantage of the results gained through questionnaire,interview with teachers and parents,observation.This thesis will elaborate on the problems of extracurricular reading and its causes,and put forward corresponding solutions.In details,this thesis will discuss two main questions:first,the status of English extracurricular reading in middle and high grade.Second,make suggestions to improve reading abilities among primary students according to prior analysis.It comes into following conclusions:First,both parents and teachers are aware of the importance of English extracurricular reading,and support the students.However,it is not fully implemented in the reality.Second,problems lie in following aspects:Students are lack of English language knowledge,British and American culture;Students do not form a good habit;Students are scare in interest;Be lack of the support from the external conditions;External factor’s interference.Aim at five aspects-students,teachers,parents,the society and theoretical study,the author believe they should be responsible.In strategy improvement,the author puts forward solutions as follows:Stimulate students’ interest according to the students’ psychological features;Advancing both family and class reading side by side;Intense efforts in guiding students;Attach more importance on English extracurricular reading,intense theoretical study.
