In recent years, international education research puts the emphasis on the cultivation of students' key competence. Domestic curriculum reform also emphasizes the cultivation of students' key competence. However, further thinking and research on the understanding of key competence and competence-based teaching is indispensable. This study attempts to understand the group's understanding of the chemical key competence from the perspective of "expert teachers". This group belongs to the elite level of chemistry educators, because they have rich experiences and clear concepts of education. Their understanding of chemical key competence can be an important reference for the majority of in-service and pre-service teachers.This paper expatiates and analyzes the present status of researches on core literacy and chemical core literacy domestically and internationally. Five expert teachers are interviewed to obtain the original research materials. Grounded theory method is applied to carry out detailed and scientific analysis of the interview data and deduce the conclusions. Based on the general analysis process of grounded theory research method, the triple coding method includes open coding, axial coding and selective coding. From the experience of five expert teachers and their articles, we generalize their understandings of chemical key competence and competence-based teaching.The study founds that expert teachers' understandings of key competence of chemical discipline and the understandings of competence-based teaching have three-dimensional structure. Dimension one, teachers should bear some core qualities,including loving students and teaching career, being knowledgeable, active thinking and lifelong-learning ability, teaching by words and deeds and model example.Dimension two, competence-based teaching should fully recognizes that knowledge is only a carrier while the process of learning is more important, that classroom is the platform and teaching methods should be optimized, that sometimes knowledge will be forgotten and only competence can be maintained. Dimensional three, the composition of students' key competence should include learning to learn and life-long learning, learning to think and scientific spirit, chemical thinking and disciplinary logics, teamwork and communication with people.On the basis of this conclusion, some suggestions on the understanding and cultivation of key competence of chemical discipline are put forward.
