| This article looks at the development of Chinese character teaching in South Korea; Chinese vocabulary teaching status in South Korea; and considers the future of Chinese character’s in Korean language teaching. Bearing in mind the influence of Chinese characters in Korean language teaching this article investigates the difficulties of using Chinese characters in the Korean language. This is a critical issue for the future of learning Korean in schools and for professional teachers. The government does not recognize or chooses to ignore this issue which affects the educational policy in Korea. Therefore the lack of policy and difficulty in teaching Chinese characters is a huge problem for Korean language learning.In Korea during a period of 60 years the Education system changed the teaching of Chinese characters over 7 times. This article will discuss in further detail these changes also; Chinese character teaching, sentence construction and content; and proposes a more pragmatic way to teach Chinese characters and possibly improve and implement the learning of Korean through Chinese characters.As part of my research I reviewed extensively elementary school and Middle school Korean language learning textbooks. In this article I propose various ideas how teachers and students can learn Chinese characters, sentence construction and content more effectively and efficiently. Furthermore, teachers can develop their teaching practices and confidence to teach more professionally. Finally I hope this article can influence change in Korean governmental education policy and can enhance cooperation between China and South Korea in educational knowledge and Chinese character teaching. |
