Study On The Proliferation Of Sounds And Related Phenomena

The phenomenon of fricative-epentheses has occured in Xishan Dialect of Suzhou.After investigation,we found that these fricatives are produced before high and front vowels which is Xia and Yu in old Chinese phonology.After experimental analysis,we believe that Xia and Yu in Xishan Dialect indeed has a phenomenon called prothesis,which is caused by a trend of devocalization in Wu dialect.Finally,we want to inspect the related phenomenon of sound changes in Chinese dialects and national languages according to this result.The first chart is about literature review.It is very common for world languages to add a vowel or consonant.From the types of epentheses,it may be all kinds of vowels or consonants;from the reasons of epentheses,it may be the common contact or hystrical cause.The second chart is about description and analysis according to the phenomenon of epentheses in Xishan Dialect.We demonstrated that Xia and Yu in Xishan Dialect do has a phenomenon called prothesis,which conditions glides.When the glide is“i”,the fricative is “”;when the glide is “y”,the fricative is “h”.However,the situation is so complicated that the epenthesis is unstable.In addition,the epenthesis doesn’t change the phonology in Xishan Dialect.The next chart is examining the reason about prothesis.The first period discussed the breathy voice in Wu dialect.We think that the epenthesis phenomenon is the internal evolution rather than external contact according to the specific location of Xishan.We also point out that the epenthesis “h” in Suzhou dialect may also be caused by the internal evolution.We also found it no longer occurred epentheses when people pronounced in Ying tone instead of Yang tone.Finally,we set out three possible explanations:the consonant,the tone and the vowel.We guess that the most possible explanation is the vowel theory,and the explanation is proved by further experiments.The last chart discusses the related phenomenon of sound change in national languages.First of all,we discuss these kinds of phenomena.Secondly,from the material of national languages,we re-examined these phenomena.
