Biehao Painting belongs to commemorative painting, which was popular among the circle of scholars from Mid-Ming Dynasty. The painters of Wu School painted the most of these works with contemporaneity and regional characteristics.By centering on LuoYuan Caotang Tu which was painted by Wen Cheng-ming,this dissertation will unfold itself on the details of this painting theme, including the origin of this genre, its development, the cause for its popularity, its artistic characteristic, and the patronization from outside world and its function. This thesis argues that Biehao Painting dates back to Garden Landscape and Studio Landscape, which developed in Yuan Dynasty and enjoyed its popularity in mid-Ming Dynasty, which in this thesis' view has something to do with the fact that literati was interested in getting a Biehao and expressed their self-worth based on their Biehao. This thesis will build its arguments based on the example of Bai Yue who owned LuoYuan Caotang Tu.He expressed his feelings towards his hometown and established himself with a moral image by Biehao Painting. He showed the painting to different people and collected inscriptions in order to make friends, shape his own image and thus win a reputation. In a word,Biehao Painting reflects the inner world and social relationship of literati in the 16 th century.
