The 1997 Transitionis a major event in Hong Kong’s history.It has also accelerated the type evolution of and diversification of Hong Kong films,including gangster films.The characters,the plots,the environments of narrative and the way of expression are gradually changing.Under the influence of the CEPA signed in 2003,more and more Hong Kong directors are paying more attention to the construction of the living atmosphere of the main body,as well as the descriptionof the humanityin terms of return,loss,salvation and transcendence.The setup ofcharacters changes from a single identity to a complex and diversifiedone.The storylineconverts from the simple binary opposition of police and bandit to multiple conflictswith the integration of law and moral standards.Narrative environment turns from the well-known Hong Kong scene to borderless one without geographical limitation.All these enrich the Hong Kong gangster film style and contribute to the deepening of the theme.So that this type of film transforms from the simple pursuit game of police and banditto a broader level considering the depth of humanity and social life,thus a new narrative pattern is formed.This narrative pattern does not only describe the identity puzzle out of the 1997 Transition,anxietyof unknown fate destinationbecause of the sovereignty return,but also strangeness to the new social environment.In addition,this patternalso shows group experience of Hong Kongese with the development dimension from negative to dark and eventually into a bright one.
