As one of the ancient and authentic national musical instruments, Sheng remains timeless over the 3000 years' cultural baptism. With the development of times and prosperity of national musical instruments, Sheng experienced historical changes in outer pattern, internal structure, timbre when playing and playing technique. After the establishment of new China, Sheng had been really used and evolved like mushrooms after rain, which indicated that, the old Sheng had been improved and new shapes emerged constantly. Based on predecessors' experience of making Sheng, Chinese instrument experts reformed aggressively, which not only enabled it to play a solo, but also made it become an important musical instrument in national orchestra. Since it can play both melody and harmony, Sheng plays the role of foiling harmony in national orchestra ensemble. In the 21st century where multiple cultures coexist, in order to keep Sheng energetic, it is necessary to innovate boldly; however, it does not mean to follow western reform blindly since it cannot bear closer analysis and spread; innovate based on inheriting tradition and achieve authentic "evolution". The development of Sheng shall remove dross, absorb quintessence and renovate boldly rather than get rid of history or follow shortcomings. With the perfection and improvement of Sheng, the performance technique of Sheng broke through and innovated greatly, which integrated with western music and drove Sheng to a new level. The article mainly discusses about the evolution process and its influence on development of Sheng with 36 keys; meanwhile,it analyzes the development status and performance technique characteristics of Sheng so as to help inherit this ancient and unique Chinese instrument.
