The Translation Of Chinese Classical Novels In China Cong Bao

This work mainly focuses on the study of the classical Chinese novels in the Chinese Repository.The works and compositions collected from the Chinese Repository are mainly under the theme of history,scholar and beauty,and supernatural tales.This dissertation selected Zibuyu,The Strange Tales from a Lonely Studio,The Dream in the Red Chamber(or so called The Legend of the stone),The Romance of the Three Kingdoms and other kinds of Classical Chinese novels into consideration.These novels could reflect those westerners especially missionaries' translation and interpretation activities in the late 19 th century.There are multiple kinds of English journals published by foreign missionaries,for example,the Asiatic Journal,Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society,The Phoenix and China Review and etc.After analyzing the specialties of these Classical Chinese Novels,this dissertation would bring these journals into investigation.By comparing the similarities and differences between these journals,this dissertation will analyze the appearance and the cultural background of the Chinese Repository.The introduction of classical Chinese novels to the West has experienced a long history,this thesis would put the Chinese Repository into the development vein of “The Introduction of Classical Chinese Novels to the West” and discover its position in it.
