People in Song Dynasty had mixed evaluations on Cai Xiang, but the reasons have rarely been analysed and classified. This article explains the reasons in the aspects of the calligraphers’ comments on him in Song Dynasty, the popularity of Yan Zhengqing’s calligraphy in the Northern Song Dynasty, the admiration for Cai Xiang, the imformation of "Song Si Jia" as wekk as the concept of "free and grass script comes after regular script". Besides, this theis also discusses the evaluations on Cai Xiang an their meanings according to his charaters, techniques, etc. Thus, the concepts on calligraphy in the Northern Song Dynasty and the Southern Song Dynasty are being carded and analysed. This essay mainly does a special study of the evaluations’differentiation phenomenon.
