NBA Sports News Translation Practice Report

With the rapid development of basketball and the increasing number of basketball fans, the demand for NBA news increased significantly. The translation of English NBA news is becoming more important than ever before. However, the research work on NBA news translation is not enough, thus more research on this field shall be done.This thesis is a practical translation report. The author aims to improve the readability and acceptability of the translation of NBA news under the guidance of Reader’s Response Theory.Based on the analysis of the characteristics of NBA news, this paper report explores four aspects in NBA news translation: how to translate news headlines; how to deal with the sports terms,military terms and newly-made words in the news to make the translation more fluent and natural; how to translate the long sentences to make the translation closer to readers and more natural; how to translate the spoken languages to reveal the speaker’s intentions and let readers know about their characters and mood.During the translation, the author used literal translation to translate headlines to retain the information and enhance its appeal by using conversions and puns. As for the sports terms,military terms and newly-made words, the author used literal translation to maintain the exotic flavor of foreign words which will not bother readers and domesticating method to translate words which will bother readers. In translation long sentences, the author used liner translation and adverse translation to make the translation more natural. In translating spoken languages, the author used free translation to abolish ambiguity in the original text to show the speaker’s intentions to readers; used domesticating method to translate idioms to make the translation be close to readers; chose proper words to reveal speaker’s characters and mood.The report shows that the author should be flexible in translating NBA news and collectively use literal translation, free translation, domestication and foreignization to translate newly-made words, sports terms and military terms by considering the reader’s acceptability. In all, the translation should be natural and influent. It is hoped that this report offers some reference value for the translation of NBA news.
