From the perspective of the development of medicine, people's understanding of medicine originated in the life experience of using certain drugs or acupuncture or other treatment methods to remove some of the symptoms.Along with accumulation of this experience,Chinese medicine system was gradually formed. This simple experience is the most primitive, simple form of the symptom-herb related relationship, for example,in the earliest traditional Chinese medicine monograph Shen Nong's Herbal Classic, the vast majority of the contents of a drug were described to treat certain forms symptoms, and also other ancient Chinese herbal works from all dynasties had retained such ways of expression. In the ancient medical books and contemporary medical writings, the expression of "if a symptom appear, then add(minus)a drug" clinical experience can be widely seen.Symptom-herb related relationship in theory and clinical practice has always been recognized and widely used by Chinese medical masters, especially in the Treatise on Febrile Diseases. In the system of Treatise on Febrile Diseases, the prescription and the addition and subtraction of the prescriptions are largely based on the conclusion of symptom-herb related relationship, and developed from that. How to extract the general regulations from practical experience to guide clinical practice is the key content of symptom-herb related relationship research. To handle the symptom-herb related relationship has great significance for improving the clinical diagnosis efficiency, the accuracy of medication, and the level of clinical diagnosis and treatment.Treatise on Febrile Diseases has excellent theoretical and clinical application value, and symptoms described in Treatise on Febrile Diseases are of high representative, and the formulae forms are quite precise. To study the symptom-herb related relationship may provide the new perspective or inspiration for exploring how to conclude and extract the clinical medication experience from traditional Chinese medicine books and dig clinical efficacy of drugs. Objective:The objective of this paper is to explore the characteristics and classification of symptoms, and establish the basis of symptom-herb related relationships deep digging;to use association rules to explore symptom-herb related relationship in Treatise on Febrile Diseases, and discover the symptom-herb related knowledge;to explore the applicability of the method of using the association rules to study symptom-herb relationships.Method:In this study, means of literature analysis was used to analyze the characteristics and classification of symptoms as well as the symptom-herb relationships described in TCM;with the items of complete form of formulae-symptoms in Treatise on Febrile Diseases as a data source to extract symptoms and herbs information, and using the method of association rules under the environment of R language,a classic association rule algorithm called Apriori algorithm were used to dig the symptoms association regulations and symptom-herb association regulations in Treatise on Febrile Diseases;the TOP5 symptoms were used as examples, and the method of association rule was used combined with means of literature analysis to discuss the relationship between symptoms and herbs by means of SPSS Modeler software. Results:the top 10 symptoms with the highest appearance frequency are:fever, irritability, diarrhea, vomiting, sweating, defecation difficulty, fullness in stomach, bloating, thirst, and aversion to cold.Set minimum support = 1%,minimum confidence=20%,the strongly related symptoms groups are:irritability-urinary difficulty-thirst,sweating-diarrhea-sudden coldness, frequent micturition-body ache-defecation difficulty,diarrhea-vomiting,and so on,the result shows that those symptoms are of the common etiology and pathogenesis,of are of the same syndromes,or often appear when combining diseases occur as the development of the disease;set minimum support = 2%,minimum confidence = 20%,analyzed from the symptom-herb relationships:the herbs related to thirst-body ache symptoms group most closely are Polyporus and Alisma, the herbs related to defecation difficulty-fever symptoms group most closely are Magnolia officinalis and Citrus aurantium;the herbs related to vomiting-diarrhea symptoms group most closely is Bupleurum;the herbs related to irritability-sweating symptoms group most closely is Magnolia;the herbs related to sudden coldness-diarrhea symptoms group most closely are Aconite and Ginger, the herbs related to defecation difficulty-delirium symptoms group most closely are Magnolia officinalis and Citrus aurantium;the herbs related to fullness in chest-fullness in ribs sections symptoms group most closely are Bupleurum and Scutellaria baicalensis;the herbs related to vomiting-fullness in stomach symptoms group most closely is Pinellia;the results shows that those kind of herbs have unique treatment efficacy over related symptoms group.Taking the top 5 symptoms with the highest appearance frequency as the example, and based on the discovery of symptom-herb related relationship, the results of the association analysis are mostly corresponded to the records on traditional Chinese medicine book like Shen Nong's Herbal Classic and Mingyi Bielu, and more closely to Mingyi Bielu. For example, the herbs have strong relationships with irritability are Licorice,Cassia twig and Jujube, while there are also records on irritability in Mingyi Bielu and said Cassia twig can treat "irritability and fullness caused by that",Licorice can stop "irritability",and Jujube can"remove irritability".The herbs have strong relationships with diarrhea are Dried ginger and Aconite, while there are also records on Dried ginger and Aconite in Shen Nong's Herbal Classic which said Dried ginger has the effects on "warming the stomach" and can treat diarrhea, and Aconite also has the effects on "warming the stomach";and Mingyi Bielu said that the Dried ginger can treat "diarrhea caused by coldness",and Aconite can treat the"stomach cold" and "diarrhea caused by coldness".Those information suggesting that the results of association analysis have a certain degree of reliability. Conclusion:The high frequency single symptoms appeared in Treatise on Febrile Diseases are the main contents of clinical inquiry of modern Chinese medicine. It is helpful to grasp the key diagnosis by referring to the high association symptom groups and the symptom-herb related relationships based on association rules, and thus to achieve efficient diagnosis and accurate medication;symptom-herb association analysis can help to find specific herbs to treat specific symptoms;to compare the association analysis results and records in Shen Nong's Herbal Classic, and Mingyi Bielu over the efficacy of related drugs can find that results of association analysis have the hermology basis, which suggests that there is a clear relationship between symptoms and herbs in the Treatise on Febrile Diseases, and the association rules are applicable to the mining of the symptom-herb relationship to a certain extent. The relationship between the symptoms and herbs is structural and hierarchical, which needs to further deepen the study of symptoms, and to explore more systematic, intensive research methods.
