With the development of Chinese economy, the semiconductor industry plays a more and more important role in our country. It is closely linked to consumer electronics, energy, automotive, semiconductor lighting, aviation and so on. Base on the 2014 statistics of the China semiconductor industry association, China's integrated circuit assembly and testing industry observed a double digit increase in sales. The semiconductor assembly and testing at the end of integrated circuit industry chain plays a very important role in the overall semiconductor chain. Therefore R&D activities are very critical in semiconductor assembly and testing development. The semiconductor assembly and testing R&D projects are influenced by the design, process, raw material, environment and so on many factors, these factors result in risks during development. Thus, the quantitative risk assessment is vital in project management, which brings us to the title of this paper. In this paper, we discuss quantitative risk assessment by using the principle of the fault tree analysis (FTA) with the DFN8x8 R&D project case study. First of all, this paper introduces the background in semiconductor assembly and testing and the basic principles of fault tree analysis (FTA). Secondly, looks at the companies operating conditions and the inherent issues encountered in semiconductor assembly and testing R&D projects. Next, this paper discusses in detail DFN8x8 case study and the application fault tree analysis (FTA) in its quantitative risk assessment. From the establishment of FT to qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis and so on, we derive at the summary of risk items, risks impact and potential countermeasures to resolve. Risks items are ranked according to their probability importance, and actions are taken to address risks with high probability importance in corresponding to prevention measures. Finally, this paper talks about overall quantitative risk assessment process and effectiveness of actions taken. In conclusion, fault tree analysis (FTA) contributes greatly to the success of DFN8x8 development in terms of cost benefit, project cycle time and minimized waste. This case study is representative of other semiconductor assembly and testing R&D projects.
