With the acceleration of urbanization, resident population as well as construction land in Shanghai assume a rapid growth trend, bringing out the increasing controversy between man and land. It has become a tough nut to crack to maintain a balance between the limitless amount of land and the increasing demand for urban housing. As an inevitable outcome of social development and progress, housing security is not merely a feasible way to sustain people's livelihood, but an indispensable part of market-oriented housing supply. With the construction of affordable housing in Shanghai since 2009, large residential community which mainly locates in suburbs has become an important pattern of the intensive construction. This paper provides macroscopic analysis on the spatial distribution of the land of affordable housing and microscopic empirical study on the residential community in Shanghai. It turns out that there are such problems concerning the layout of land in Shanghai as " Obvious segregation of urban space", "separation of office and home", "over-concentration of housing layout" and "ambiguities of guiding rules". In terms of land planning, scattered residential layout, mixture of Real estate and Indemnificatory Residential, and preferential policies should be taken into account. This study is against the backdrop of rapid urbanization and the expansion of affordable housing in Shanghai, when the research on the spatial distribution of affordable residential land is still in need of investigation. The purpose of this study is to explore the spatial potentiality of residential land by combing and analyzing the present situation and problems of the spatial layout of this king of land, and then put forward countermeasures in this regard.
