With the development of the theory and technology of optical fiber, optical fiber sensing technology has become an active branch of photo electronic technology,micro-structured fiber and polarization maintaining fiber with its flexible structure and singular characteristics become the elite in optical fiber sensing field.A high accuracy instrument for detecting the orientation of the core is needed to improve the sensing accuracy for the core of micro-structured optical fiber characteristics. The design and the manufacture of the fiber core orientation detection device for micro-structure fiber were investigated in this paper.Polarized imaging principle and phase contrast imaging were analyzed by wave optics theory to testify the feasibility of the detection of the core orientation. And designed the experiments based on polarized light microscopy imaging and phase contrast microscopy imaging theory to detect the orientation of micro-structure fiber core.In the experiments, the side view images of Panda PM fiber and three-core PM fiber with cladding of 125?m and elliptical inner cladding type PM fiber with cladding of 40?m were captured and process the images captured in different methods via vision and motion modules in LabVIEW to select the appropriate eigenvalue to establish the correspondence between eigenvalue and angles.Good experimental results were obtained by processing the experiments data.A polarization orientation detecting system including the mechanical structure and the circuitry was designed for elliptical inner cladding type PM fiber with cladding of 40?m based on polarized microscopy imaging principle. The system was calibrated and the error sources were analyzed and the feasibility was verified to detect the polarization orientation of small core PM fiber with cladding of 40?m based on polarized microscopy imaging principal.
