With the extensive use of the optical fiber sensor(OFS), fiber refractive-index(RI) sensors have been widely applied to engineering field. Polarization maintaining fiber(PMF) as a kind of special optical fiber, relying on its high birefringence, good polarization maintaining performance, and low attenuation, is used in fiber optic gyro, optical fiber temperature, force and bending sensor and some optical fiber communication system. Recently, PMF sensors have gradually attached more attention of researchers, such as polarization maintaining microstructured optical fiber grating, dual-core photonic crystal fiber(PCF) and other sensors have a wide range of applications.In this thesis, a refractive index sensor based on intermodal interference is proposed, and the theoretical and experimental research works are carried out to verify the scheme. The main contents contain:Firstly, by using finite element method(FEM), analyze mode propagation characteristics and intermodal interference principle of dual-hole photonic crystal polarization maintaining fiber and the elliptical core PMF respectively. And the basic properties of the dual mode generating condition and intermodal interference mode field distribution are explicit.Secondly, researches on refractive-index sensors characteristics of the tapered dual-hole polarization PCF and corrosion E-core PMF are simulated and analyzed, establish mathematical intermodal interference response model under the condition of different liquid RI.Then, according to the simulation results, the intermodal interference experiment system is established, and specialty study on the intermodal interference characteristics of E-core PMF after the corrosion treatment, launch the response experiment research of the refractive-index sensors.Finally, through the experimental study, all the key problems about the sensor catch data analysis and arrangement, such as the RI response range, response sensitivity and linearity of the sensor.Refractive-index sensors based on PMF intermodal interference principle scheme is presented in this thesis to realize sensing signal demodulation with a simpler way for light intensity measurement.The sensor has the advantages of simple structure and low demodulation cost, and has good theory significance and practical application value for promoting the fiber refractive-index sensors research.
