In 2013, the number and types of smart phone games experience a growth spurt. However,product homogenization of phone games is the core factor that inhibits its development. Thus,innovation in art style determines the success of a phone game. As another mainstream design style following flat design, low poly art with different connotation and different essence becomes popular in different design fields quickly in the past several years. At the first sight, the style of low poly seems to be a restoration of the low poly of 1990 s, but differences of the two styles show up on closer inspection. Today, the low poly admires detailed simplification and abstract in visual expression, and stresses the color collocation of different elements.Pioneer game designers attempts to apply the low poly to the phone game. Once published,the unique visual style of low poly is pursued by players. As the play scene takes up a great proportion in the whole scene, the style of the play scene determine the tone of art style of a phone game. How to better present the low poly becomes the focus of game developers. But, to date,through a thorough examination of literature in low poly, we find few has done studies about the function of low poly in game scene. Moreover, rare has been done about the design characteristics and principles of low poly.Through the collection of large number of relevant literatures, this paper analyzes the phone games of low poly style with the entry point of low polygon and its relevant theories based on the theories of phone games and game scene design. In accordance with the classification of phone games, this paper concentrates on the models and colors of three types, the minty, the cartoon, and the vintage styles, and summarizes the design characteristics, design principles, development trends of low poly in phone games by means of literature research, descriptive methods,observational methods, and comparative methods. In the end, this paper concludes the relevant theories regarding scene features of the phone games with low poly, and applies them to scene design of the cartoon style game---Sword of Dragonshard---so as to verify their rationality. It can be seen from the final rendered image of the first scene of Forgotten Lands that the visual characteristics of the scene conform to those of the typical phone games with low poly.The findings of this paper cover the following aspects.I.Based on the literature research and qualitative analysis, this paper summarizes the common concept and characteristics of low poly style that can be applied to the other areas.II. Based on the literature research and qualitative analysis, this paper concludes the concept of phone games with low poly and classifies the known phone games with low poly.III. Based on the literature research and descriptive, observational, and comparative methods, this paper generalizes the characteristics, design principles and development trends of the scene design of phone games with low poly.
