With the rapid development of wireless technologies, people put forward more needs about wireless network scenes. A new broadband wireless network structure, wireless mesh network(WMN), has gradually become the focus of many people. It is a self-organized, multi-hop distributed network, with the advantages of large capacity and high rates.It plays a great performance in various scenes, especially emergency communication and telemedicine. Among all the implementations of wireless mesh network, IEEE 802.11s wireless mesh protocol is most widely supported and applied because of its good integration and correlation with the most widely used wireless LAN scheme IEEE 802.11.However, in the current research, there are few complete implementations for the whole wireless mesh network system. Some schemes are complicated to implement and can not support the dual requirements of both wireless mesh networking and management. With the popularization and development of open-source hardware and software,OpenWrt system has been widely used in the field of routers and automatic control. OpenWrt system has good support for wireless mesh network. Its simple configuration method, rich software and compilation tools become the basis for the realization of the new scheme in this paper.The scheme in this paper mainly focuses on wireless mesh network and its management based on the OpenWrt system. The design and implementation of the wireless mesh network scheme and its management solution are given respectively from steps to concrete methods. Thus, some basic research about the IEEE 802.11s protocol, the configuration of the OpenWrt system, the development of related tools, the topology discovery algorithms and the SNMP protocol is carefully studied. Finally, the whole system is implemented based on the design scheme, and the corresponding test is done for the wireless mesh network. The relevant functional modules of the wireless mesh management are also tested, and the performance of the topology discovery algorithm is compared.This paper gives a full set of solutions on wireless mesh network system, depending on OpenWrt open source system. The realization and test is also done about the system. What's more, this paper gives a total sumarazation and outlook about future works.
