There are bright prospects for 3D construction on smartphones, such as 3D video, Virtual Reality, digital city, E-commerce, historic preservation, etc. Although advent smartphones are equipped with high resolution cameras, powerful CPUs and GPUs, the performance of these smartphones is not comparable to desktop computers, especially in computational ability and power consumption. Moreover, there are many complex algorithms about the construction and rendering of 3D objects with big and redundant data. Network transmission is another problem to be considered for the mobile applications. Therefore, how to reconstruct 3D models on smartphones to increase its entertainment and functionality is an attractive challenge. This thesis designs and implements two construction and rendering frameworks which are called 3D-SaaS and MORB-SLAM for smartphones.First of all, theories and technologies of 3D construction and rendering are stated. Two construction and rendering frameworks are built on smartphones and clarified by flow charts. These frameworks provide a variety of image acquisition ways to increase the adaptability in different scenes. Especially, with the help of cloud servers, 3D-SaaS can share its computation tasks to increase construction efficiency. The critical parts of these frameworks are 3D models construction and rendering, and it will be illustrated with flow charts and models reconstructed. In addition, by building an evaluation system for 3D models, it reflects user satisfaction about the performance of 3D reconstruction. This thesis builds 3D construction and rendering frameworks based on current smartphones which are universal for most people. With the efficient construction algorithms, model rendering and the assistance of cloud servers, these frameworks provide many combination schemes and improve flexibility and robustness of 3D construction in different application scenarios. Experimental results show that with majority resolution images captured by current smartphones, constructed models which are produced by 3D-SaaS scheme are accepted by users both on construction time and model accuracy. Meanwhile, 3D-SaaS consumes less CPU usage, which means less power consumption. On the other hand,MORB-SLAM has the advantage on real-time. These two frameworks have their own strengths and are suitable to be applied on smartphones to satisfy future requirements of users.
