With the development of mobile Internet, people's demands for mobile phone-based navigation are stronger and stronger. However, existing mobile phone navigation systems lack a sufficient integration with the realistic world, resulting in a poor user friendliness. At the same time, the development of smartphones make the application of augmented reality technologies on mobile phones more and more convenient. By combining the technologies of mobile phone sensor, location-based services and OpenGL ES 3D rendering, this paper designs and implements an augmented reality based smartphone navigation system, so that users can see the virtual information superimposed on the realistic world in the process of walking, which improves the user experience. This paper designs the basic flow of the POI display module, navigation display module and other auxiliary modules, and focuses on the design and implementation of two key algorithms: first, we design an algorithm to map the POIs on the View coordinate system of the screen and detect the collisions detections, which solves the problem how to calculate the position of the graphics on the screen View coordinate system in real time; second, we design an algorithm to map the navigation path data on the OpenGL ES 3D coordinate system, which solves the problem how to calculate the position of the graphics in the OpenGL ES coordinate system in real time, and further render the graphics to the corresponding position on the phone screen. Based on the above methods, we implement an augmented reality based smartphone navigation system, and apply it in the campus of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. Satisfactory results are achieved through extensive experiments on the function and performance of the system.
