With the development of flight technology and the improvement of aircraft performance, the airborne LCD need to display a variety of graphic information in real time, at the same time it must have high reliability and high readability to ensure the normal display of characters and images in a terrible flight conditions. As an important component of LCD module, how to improve the performance and stability of backlight in airborne environment has become focus of researchers. This paper takes a 10.4-inch airborne LCD module as an example, introduces the design process of its edge-lighting backlight.The design of backlight need to consider the choice of light source?light guide plate and optical film, and this paper analyzed the three aspects in detail respectively. First of all, the paper put forward with the method of white light+ coloured light to realize high brightness and night vision compatible functions. Then, according to the actual demand, the paper choosed the light guide plate with suitable thickness to provide the basis for the subsequent design. Finally, analyzed the basis of the combination of optical film. A backlight module is established and simulated by LightTools based on the above optical parameters of the design elements, then the brightness and uniformity of the simulation results are evaluated.A backlight sample was made in this paper, and the three proofings?reinforcement and heat dissipation in the production and assembly process was introduced in detail. Then the sample was tested in the darkroom environment. The results show that the brightness?uniformity and color coordinates of the backlight can meet the design requirements, but there are a little deviations from the simulation results. At the same time, the high and low temperature impact test and vibration test were carried out to the sample.And after tests, it still can work normally. Finally, we draw the conclusion that the backlight can meet the requirements of night vision compatibility and environmental adaptability, so it could be used for airborne liquid crystal display.
