High performance frequency source has important applications in communication,radar,measurement and other fields,and is the source of the radio frequency signal of the system.The traditional frequency source has the problems of low frequency and poor spectrum purity.Optoelectronic Oscillator(OEO),which can generate low jitter light pulse signal and high frequency microwave signal with low phase noise and high Q value,is gaining extensive research of scholars in recent years.In this paper,the key properties and design issues of OEO are studied theoretically and experimentally.In this paper,the basic principle of OEO is analyzed,and three key technologies of low phase noise OEO are introduced:single-mode operation,phase noise suppression and frequency stability enhancement.The conventional solutions of these three key technologies are introduced,and their basic principles are analyzed and compared.In order to improve the performance of the OEO,two schemes are proposed and demonstrated.The first architecture is a dual-loop OEO with a phase-locked loop(PLL).The principle of the dual-loop structure on the side-mode suppression was analyzed.The frequency stability of the OEO is improved by the phase-locked loop and a temperature control module.The noise transfer function of the phase-locked loop is analyzed theoretically and used to optimize the phase noise performance of the OEO.The second architecture is an injection-locked(IL)OEO with an extra feedback loop.The extra feedback loop is designed to control the loop length by detecting the phase relationship between the output signal and the injection signal improving the long-term stability of the OEO.The noise transfer function in s domain of the IL OEO is analyzed theoretically and used to suppress the phase noise of the IL OEO.Finally,a prototype of OEO is designed based on PLL and IL technique,which can produce a 10 GHz microwave signal with a side-mode suppression ratio of>75 dB,phase noise of less than-140 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset and frequency drift of<0.05 ppm within 30 hours.
