In wireless communication systems, the RF power amplifier is one of the most important modules. Its energy consumption accounts for most of the whole system, and the bandwidth of the whole system are also largely determined by the bandwidth of the RF power amplifier. With the rapid development of wireless communication systems,under the constant stimulation of engineering demand, the method to improve the efficiency of power amplifier and to maintain the high efficiency in a certain bandwidth has become the focus in the RF power amplifier researching. Based on the background mentioned above, this thesis explores the efficiency of RF power amplifier.First, the background and engineering application of this topic research is introduced, the development of high efficiency and broadband power amplifier at home and abroad is summarized. Moreover, basic theoretical knowledge on RF power amplifier and the main technical index are stated.The principle of improving efficiency through changing the conduction angle is first introduced in chapter 2. And based on this principle, the process of deducing the basic impedance condition and the output voltage and current waveform needs to meet for ideal class F power amplifier from voltage and current waveform of class B power amplifier is summarized. Meanwhile, the principle of harmonic controlling to improve the efficiency of high efficiency and theory of class J amplifier and continuous class F amplifier is explained.The theory introduced before is then applied in practical engineering. First, the feasibility of the harmonic control theory applying in internal match, the method to expand the bandwidth is analyzed. By the way, a design procedure used for permitting harmonic control in internal matched power amplifier is proposed. Then taking the reliability and effectiveness in design and testing process are into consideration, an output harmonic controlled high-efficiency power amplifier is carried out. This high efficiency RF power amplifier works from 2.7 to 3.0 GHz, with output power above 44.78 dBm, the additional power efficiency is more than 68.18%, the highest of which can reach to 73.87%.By studying the impact the input harmonic control put on the efficiency, and analyzing the performance of input harmonic impedance, a input harmonic controlled power amplifier is brought out. The power amplifier works from 2.7 to 3.0GHz, the output power exceeds 44.2 dBm, PAE on the drain is above 81.58%, with its peak reaches 83.09%.
