In recent years, with the development of society, the number of vehicles is grow-ing,which has made traffic congestion become a worldwide problem. In big cities in particular, traffic jams have become a social norm during rush hours. This problem will not only cause economic loss and time delay for pedestrians, but also brings an increase in pollution and waste of resources of the environment on which people live.At the present stage, researchers from various countries have paid a lot of attention on this problem,in an effort to reduce traffic jams and improve traffic efficiency. This is the reason that intelligent transportation systems are designed, and intelligent traffic light control is an important component.Traffic in a city is largely affected by traffic light control systems. They are used to collect traffic information from sensors and wireless networks in intelligent transporta?tion systems, they use computerised services to analyze the data and then formulate the corresponding signal strategy. However, there are defects in this process because of the structural characteristics of the method, which make the existing intelligent traffic light control systems face some challenges,e.g.,how to avoid redundant roadside sen-sors,resist malicious vehicles and avert single-point failure. In order to cope with those challenges,we propose two secure intelligent traffic light controlling schemes using fog computing in VANET whose security is based on the hardness of the computational Diffie-Hellman(CDH)based puzzle and the hash collision based puzzle respectively. These two schemes assume that the traffic lights are fog devices. The first scheme is a simple extension of a recent scheme for defending denial-of-service attacks. In this scheme,a pool of CDH based puzzles with designated hardness are generated by a traffic light, and then the traffic light encrypts the puzzles using an location based encryption(LBE)scheme to broadcast the puzzles to the nearby vehicles. We show that this simple extension is inefficient when the vehicle density is high according to the characteristics of fog devices. The second scheme is much more efficient and is friendly to fog devices.A traffic light only needs to broadcast a single hash collision based puzzle encrypted based on an LBE scheme to nearby vehicles. Therefore even when the vehicle density is high, the traffic light can verify the validity of the vehicles efficiently.
