A Study On Construction Project Risk Database Development And Application Of Knowledge Discovery In Database

In the research concerning risk in construction projects,risk management has been regarded as a method to quantify the influence of risk and also a process responding to the uncertainties.However,researchers have indicated that the risk management process should also incorporate recording and spreading of risk related information and knowledge,thus promoting the communication of experience-based risk management methods among the project participants.Based on this idea,a construction project risk data base was developed in this study,and then the Knowledge Discovery was applied to present the process of extracting meaningful patterns in the database.Microsoft Access was applied as the platform to develop the database in this study.The information recorded in the database included the Project Characters,Project Participants,Project Financing,Project Performance and also Risk Related Information.When it comes to Risk Related Information,the relevant concepts like risk sources,risk factors,risk event and response strategies were distinguished to elaborate the complex process from risk sources to the negative impact on project performance.Then,the risk related information was recorded based on the above concepts.Therefore,a data platform was developed to keep track of the risks in past projects.After developing the database,Knowledge Discovery in Database was applied to extract the meaningful patterns in data.In this study,1119 International Development Project,which are also infrastructure projects,were selected from the World Bank Projects & Operations Database,and then the project data were imported into the developed database in this study to discovery the factors influencing the project performance.The data mining results shows: in the International Development Project,the Borrower Preparation and Borrower Performance in Implementation,the Bank Preparation and Overall Performance,and the Project Sustainability have an influence on the Project Performance.Particularly,the Borrower Preparation and Borrower Performance in Implementation has a significant influence.In addition,In order to guarantee the expected outcome of International Development Project,1)the proper analysis of local demand and project feasibility study should be conducted comprehensively during project preparation;2)substantial supervision and direction should also be provided to the local implementing agencies during project implementation;3)the commitment and involvement of local communities and agencies into the project should also be guaranteed during both design and implementation phases.The result indicates that,Knowledge Discovery in Database could be adopted to assist researchers in discovering knowledge from large dataset,and overcome the limitation of manual data analysis.However,the result interpretation should also incorporate the knowledge background of researchers.At last,the Construction Project Risk Database developed in this study and the process of Knowledge Discovery in Database could also benefit the practitioners by proving an instrument to manage project information and acquire knowledge,thus serving as the support for risk decisions.
