Communication Studies emerged in the 1920s and Communication was formed in the 1940s.There are two important figures who were overlooked during the development process of Communication:Dewey and Lippmann.The reason for this phenomenon is on purpose when mentioning Communication History,and this essay is based on the fracture zone of Communication History.This essay attempts to look for the importance in the field of Communication of Lippmann and Dewey by re-studying Communication History of Thought.In order to facilitate the research,the essay selects the debate about the public between Lippmann and Dewey mentioned in Communication History for several times as a starting point,and re-cards the thoughts of communication of Dewey and Lippmann by rereading "the Dispute",and then rediscovers their important contribution and significance for Communication.During studying their communication thoughts,in fact,we found that "the Dispute" was constructed by a representative of American Cultural Studies-James Kerry,so this essay analyzes the reason why this debate was constructed by Kerry in the area of History of Thought.By comparing News and Democratic Thought between Lippmann and Dewey,we could tease out the significance of these two masters for communication studies:they not only provided a lot of method resources for the development of Communication,but also jointly opened the door of Mass Communication Research,meanwhile enabled American Communication Studies to form two opposite academic paths.In the conclusion,the essay discusses the important reference significance for Chinese communication development through researching "the Dispute" by using the method of Communication Academic History,at the same time,I hope Chinese communication studies is able to have a more clear understanding for crises and problems when re-backtracking on communication thoughts,and so as to promote Communication achieving new breakthroughs in today's era of social media.
