Infrared polarization imaging technology is a new imaging detection technology, which has broad application prospects in the field of military target detection and recognition, and especially has significant application value in dealing with complex battlefield environment such as camouflage, stealth and other interference, owing to the characteristics and advantages of itself. This article has carried out research on infrared polarization imaging technology, mainly in the four aspects of the polarization mechanism, characteristics analysis, feature extraction and object detection.Firstly, the mechanism of the generation of infrared polarization is researched. The polarization effect when infrared radiation is reflected, emitted or scattering from an object is analyzed, whose results show that the polarization effect of infrared is wildly existent and can be interpreted, and provide a theoretical foundation for the application of infrared polarization in the field of target detection and recognition.Then, the infrared polarization properties is summarized and analyzed theoretically and experimentally. The research has been done on the diversities of polarization properties among different object and the influence brought from the external environment conditions and the detector condition, whose results further demonstrate the feasibility of infrared polarization at the identification of targets.What's more, in the aspects of infrared polarization information processing and infrared polarization feature extraction, a model of infrared polarization information is proposed based on the polarization decomposition, and the method for polarization solution is proposed base on the model. Besides, the extraction of basic polarization features, the optimization of the polarization component in the whole direction and the decomposition of the completely polarized component are researched. To deal with the fact that target submerged in strong clutter background, a method for area target feature extraction and enhancement is proposed.At last, the extracted infrared polarization features are applied for target detection. A point target detection method based on the composition of the optimization of the polarization component is proposed, as well as an area target detection method based on the extraction of the mismatched polarization information, both are proved to be effective by the experiment results.
