As a kind of high accuracy angular sensor, photoelectric encoder is widely used in the fields of military, aerospace, medical and industrial production etc. The accuracy of the encoder is improved with the development of precision measurement technology, and the accuracy calibration of encoder also receives more attention. Because the existing calibration methods of photoelectric encoder have not researched the error compensation and most of them have deficiencies such as complex calibration operation, low efficiency and low automation, etc. Based on the error compensation, the calibration method of photoelectric matrix encoder is researched with advantages of high efficiency, high precision and high automation in this paper.In this paper, the basic principle of encoder calibration is initially analyzed, then a method of photoelectric matrix encoder calibration is established by the error compensation and dual frequency laser interferometer based on comparison. Second, the encoder calibration system is constructed according to the research of the calibration method of photoelectric matrix encode, and the composition and function of the encoder calibration system are introduced in detail. After that, the source of error in the calibration system is analyzed. Detection scheme of the angular error is researched and the testing experiment is carried out afterwards. Error compensation model is established and the algorithm of several error compensation models is analyzed according to the measurement result of angular error which has been proved compared with compensation experiments. Finally, the software of the encoder calibration system was written and the calibration experiment was carried out compared with traditional methods. The result shows that the calibration of error compensation is accurate and reliable, thus the method proposed in this paper is effective and feasible.
