Traditional Mongolian patterns are not only the essential carriers of the Mongolian culture, but also the main embodiment of aesthetic ideas of the nomads. Against an increasingly nationalizing and internationalizing background of the current day, the national culture of the Mongols is gaining its momentum towards a trend of graphic design. As such, a study on the application of the traditional Mongolian patterns in graphic design carries great implications in its own right.This thesis, from a perspective of cultural connotations of the traditional Mongolian patters, introduces related definitions, narrates their philosophical and aesthetic concepts, and mainly studies the application objectives, principles, methods as well as the prospects of the traditional Mongolian patterns in graphic design. Based on the case studies of the traditional Mongolian patterns and their applications in Inner Mongolia, the author proposes that, the innovative application of such patterns in graphic design can not only enhance the visual effects of the works designed, but also carries great implications for inheriting quality national culture of the Mongols and for promoting its design connotations, and that both the spirits of the times and the national features of the products with unique Mongolian characteristics can be manifested via a new visual language by adopting such means as remodeling, simplifying, magnifying and abstracting in the skillful course of the application of the Mongolian traditional patterns in graphic design on the principles of intuition, symbolism and accuracy.This thesis is composed of five chapters: Chapter One introduces the reasons for the topic selection, the purpose, methodology and significances of the study, the organization of the thesis and the research status of the subject; Chapter Two discusses the concepts of traditional Mongolian patterns and graphic design; Chapter Three narrates the philosophical and aesthetic concepts of the traditional Mongolian patterns; Chapter Four, being the highlight of the thesis, attempts to make a thorough study on the application of the traditional Mongolian patterns in graphic design by centering on their application objectives, principles and methods, exerting a positive influence on the future graphic design; Chapter Five approaches the application prospects of the traditional Mongolian patterns in graphic design from cultural, tourist and commercial perspectives.
