With the continuous development of the terrain generation theory and with continuously improvement of the structure and ability of graphics hardware. The effect of terrain generation is more and more realistic. And because of the irreplaceable role of the natural terrain in the scene, it is more and more important in the application of terrain generation in the related fields. Terrain generation is widely used in landscape scene design, flight simulation training, computer games, film special effects, military battlefield simulation, and simulation training in emergency relief. With the expansion and development of the application, the formation of the terrain has become a hot research topic in computer graphics.Thesis on existing conventional synthetic terrain modeling methods were studied. The analysis revealed that, although these methods can be generated with a certain realistic terrain, there are still some problems in common. For example, which provide for users to control is very limited, and it requires the users to have an abundant knowledge of modeling, and even if with these controls, it can not generate the terrain user wants to get. These defects make routine procedural modeling method be seldom used for the actual terrain generation, automation needs to be improved.This thesis proposes a sketch-based feature, which applied fractal terrain generation and spatial interpolation method to allow users to control the style and the feature of terrain generation results by intuitive simple means. Because in the construction of large-scale scenes, the mountains are the most important large-scale visual elements, we focus on features and synthetic mountains. Inspired by the contours, this thesis studied the method of extracting features from the ridge line in the mountains, and proposing a novel method for generating frame mountain terrain, using inverse distance interpolation method for spatial interpolation framework terrain,processing the discontinuities or noise point in the terrain generation by Gaussian smoothing. Finally we get the terrain height field which is in accordance with sketch features, meets the law of nature and has the real details totally.Finally, the method was tested on the experiment, at first interactive methods were tested; then we used Open GL basic light rendering for the generated terrain height fields and the results were presented, at the same time doing a comparative analysis compared results with other algorithms; at last, relevant data which is generated in the process were analyzed. It verifies that the paper method has simple, direct and effective means of control, it has fast generation efficiency, and is characterized by a certain degree of real terrain rendering clear results.
