Wireless local area network(WLAN) has been widely used in many entertainment venues, families, enterprises. In this period, WLAN providing the function of wireless access has also been well developed because of its strong specificity including fast running speed, lower cost, and various types of topology. One important problem is how to guarantee the WLAN with different structures and functions to operate safely and stably. A wireless local area network Portal authentication system is proposed and designed to solve this problem.Centralized WLAN architecture with the concept of stratification has become more and more popular in recent years. One key device called wireless controller(AC) is incorporated into this architecture. And Gate Sec series wireless controller provides powerful functions including wireless access point managing, wireless client managing, wireless roaming. Based on this feature, an independent research and development of the “Portal + Radius” authentication function has been achieved. It can customize Portal page design to fit specific needs of hotels, restaurants and other entertainment places. In addition, it can work together with access point(AP) in Airsec series to realize the fast intuitive user authentication and accounting functions. The Portal authentication system in this discourse adopts centralized WLAN architecture, which is applied to the network topology built together with AC, AP, Station, Portal Server and Radius Server to realize user authentication and accounting functions.Firstly, the protocol of Portal authentication system and the typical network under the centralized WLAN architecture are all discussed. Secondly, on one hand, the function requirements of the system is discussed, like the Portal kernel, the user authentication, the user online and offline function; on the other hand, the environment and module division the Portal authentication system are also investigated, which includes software and hardware environment. The performance requirements of the certification system is also introduced. Then, the design and implementation of the Portal kernel, the user's authentication, the user's online and the user's offline function are completed according to the main business functions. Finally, the authentication system is built and tested by AC, AP, Station, Radius Server and Portal Server. Testing results demonstrate that Portal kernel can achieve normal forwarding and fast forwarding, user's normal online and normal using of the detection function, traffic statistics without error, normal rules distribution, and user's active referrals or forced offline going corresponding process. This system can support 20000 people online at the same time, 500 people per minute on and off the line at the same time, and guarantee a large number of users repeatedly on and off the line without the memory leak problem.Nowadays, the market of WLAN has been increasing well. The access authentication technology can guarantee the WLAN to operate safely and stably. The Portal authentication system just discuss how to use technic in existence to work it out that the access authentication of WLAN system. Hence, as one of the most practical and stable network access system, the application of Portal system can be further developed and expanded. Portal authentication system can keep WLAN with different structures and functions working safely and stably. At the same time, it can enhance the local area network and provide a better data exchange between WLAN and Internet.
