This paper studies the characteristics of spherical conformal antenna array. First a double-layer circularly polarized microstrip antenna of double feed points is designed as the element of the array. Based on the microstrip antenna, the pattern of antenna and the scanning properties of planar phased antenna array is discussed. In order to study the properties of conformal antenna array, the simulation of coupling between the elements of spherical array, on the basis of which we discuss the properties of conformal array, is studied..To broaden the bandwidth, a parasitic patch is added on the single-patch microstrip antenna. The impedance characteristic of the antenna meets the requirements in the frequency, and the gain achieved 9.7dB. Using the antenna as the element of array, active element pattern of quadrate array and clustered array is gained by means of HFSS, then the scanning characteristics of two planar arrays are studied. The results show that similar number of elements of clustered array has a larger scanning range, and the square array loses its scanning capability when scanning angle is just less than 60 o.The study of conformal array begins with the coupling between elements in spherical array, then the paper discusses the influence of spacing between elements in array on S parameters. Based on above study, comparison of arrays of elements which are distributed in uniform angle and spacing is studied. The results show that in the scanning range array of elements distributed in uniform spacing has a more stable gain.
