Studies On The Traslation Society Weekly Edition' East Newspaper Translation Collection

From the Opium War starting the foreign invasion to the rise of domestic newspapers in the 19th century, the development of Chinese Modern Newspapers are closely linked with national destiny. In the context of saving the country and seeking national survival, the individuals like Wei yuan,Lin Zexu and the movements such as the Westernization Movement, the Reform Movement and the surge of revolutionary thoughts are all taking rejuvenation of the Chinese nation as their own duty. With the signing of the " Treaty of Nanking", " Treaty of Tientsin", " Convention of Peking" and a series of other unequal treaties, China lost its land step by step and people of insights in the late Qing Dynasty gradually realize that the acceptance of western civilization should not stay at the object and technology level and the society needed the all-round reforms including politics, economy, education, culture, etc. After the Sino-Japanese war failure, far-sighted people directly felt Japan's success in reform of studying western civilization. With the development of reform thoughts, societies and organizations have been established one after another and founding newspapers has become an effective way for reformers to spread Western culture and reform ideas. Moreover, the newspapers have become a window for the Chinese people, showing outside world and introduce western thoughts. Since at that time, going abroad and experiencing the western culture were still very scarce, the translations of Western, Japanese newspapers and books have become an important way for Chinese people to understand the outside world and accept the western stuff.To deal with Qing's domestic trouble and foreign invasion, in September 1897, Dong Kang and Zhao Yuanyi funded and established translation society in Shanghai. This translation society started the newspaper "The Translation Society Weekly Edition" in October Guangxu twenty-three years (October 26,1897) in Shanghai. As one of the earliest specialized translation newspapers in Chinese modern and contemporary history, "The Translation Society Weekly Edition" widely translated the eastern and western books and the discussions about them in order to fulfill the domestic needs with foreign opinions. And it truly achieved the goals of developing people's intelligence, broadening their knowledge and advertising the Reform thoughts. Among them, the "East newspaper translation collection" led by Andoutorao used the two columns news translation format originated by "The Translation Society Weekly Edition". It is also comparable to the "West newspaper translation collection" in terms of article length and significance. Although other foreign language translations have been added since the eighth edition and Japanese articles proportion has declined, the Japanese translations of a total of 111 in 19 editions, still accounted for one third of the total translations. This article mainly summarizes Andoutorao's activities in China and conducts researches on his name and his contributions to "The Translation Society Weekly Edition" "East newspaper translation collection". Meanwhile, by reviewing the historical context and using the methods of historical literature, translation studies and text analysis, this article examines the influences of historical background, translation form and translation object on translations through comparative study of the translation and the original article. Moreover, based on these researches, the article also discusses the effect of" The Translation Society Weekly Edition" on Chinese modern ideology and culture. In addition, by tracking a large number of Japanese new terms shown in "East newspaper translation collection", this paper could provide supplementary material to "Japanese loan words".This paper is divided into five parts:the first chapter introduces the historical background of the establishment of "The Translation Society Weekly Edition" from three aspects of the late 19th century Sino-Japanese relations, foreshadowing role of Westernization Movement on the Reform thoughts and the development of Chinese and Japanese newspapers. And the some articles of "The Translation Society Weekly Edition' East newspaper translation collection", their contents features and significance are also discussed in the first chapter. The second chapter, through a large amount of collected materials, discusses the main translator of "East newspaper translation collection" Andoutorao's events and his excellent translation, analyzes and confirms his great contributions to "East newspaper translation collection" program and other parts of "The Translation Society Weekly Edition". The third chapter, with the use of translation theory and text analysis method, compares some valuable original historical newspapers collected from Japan and studies the influences of characteristics of the newspaper form, historical background of the late 19th century and individual thoughts of translator Andoutorao and newspaper chief editor Zhang Taiyan on the translation results. Also, this part provides the basic supplementary material for "Japanese loan words" research. The fourth chapter conducts in-depth research on "East newspaper translation collection" texts and explains its critical role in revealing the relationships between the Western powers and Asia, advertising Reform thoughts and starting new social conducts. Finally, the conclusion confirms "The Translation Society Weekly Edition"'s contributions to Chinese Modern newspaper development from the aspects of circulation and its characteristics. In addition, the final part also elaborates some "East newspaper translation collection" articles' significance and positive influences on Chinese language development, the spreading of Reform thoughts, Western Learning and Chinese modernization process.
