As the extension and supplement of in-class reading in the Chinese language curriculum,extra-curricular reading plays a very important role in cultivating students’ comprehensive quality.Extra-curricular reading helps students increase knowledge,promotes the development of their emotion and intelligence,and then enrich their spiritual life.The Chinese Language Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011 edition)emphasizes on the cultivation of school children’s interest in extra-curricular reading and advocates doing less homework,reading more books,reading good books and reading the whole book.This article encourages schoolchildren to choose the content of the extra-curricular reading they are interested in and establishes the requirement for reading quantity.Thus,it can be seen that improving primary school students’ reading ability and developing their reading habits have become one of the important tasks of primary school education.This paper adopts the method of combining theory with empirical research.Taking Liaocheng G primary school as an example,through student questionnaires and teacher exchanges,we made a survey on the current situation of Chinese extra-curricular reading in primary school from various aspects like extra-curricular reading attitude,extra-curricular reading plan,extra-curricular reading content selection,extra-curricular reading methods,extra-curricular reading evaluation and the implementation of extended reading classes and so on.we aim to find out the existing problems,and then according to the data and interviews,analyze the reasons for these problems from the aspects of schools,teachers,parents and students themselves.Finally,based on the existing problems and the reasons,we put forward the corresponding optimization strategies.Studies have shown that the problems existing in primary school students’ extra-curricular reading have common ground with the problems found in previous studies,but G Primary School also has its specific problems.In order to improve extra-curricular reading for G primary school students and to provide some suggestions for other schools inthe local area,we proposed that teachers and parents should attach importance to students’ extra-curricular reading.According to children’s age characteristics,they should select books suitable for the age of the children and communicate with them about extra-curricular reading.Teachers and parents are supposed to cultivate children’s reading habits,enhance their reading skills and develop a good reading atmosphere in homes and schools.Meanwhile,teachers should also raise their awareness of lifelong learning,read extensively,and use their profound knowledge to influence students.They should also pay attention to the guidance of extra-curricular readings for school children,establish the assessment mechanism for the reading process and reading results.And also,schools should actively carry out Chinese language curriculum reforms,and extended reading classes have got significant results in improving children’s reading.However,according to existing problems,we should actively improve them and strive to achieve the best results.
