Junior-senior transition period,an extremely vital turning point in basic education period,has attracted attention of educational circles and foreign language teaching circles.The new English Curriculum clearly states that the ordinary senior English courses are natural extension of compulsory education period and important components of elementary education stage.During this period,freshmen of senior high school face a great number of problems in every aspect of English learning,as vocabulary learning being the most outstanding.Vocabulary is the base of English learning,affecting the effectiveness of English learning of senior high period and lifelong study as well.Therefore,it is of great significance to help students make a successful vocabulary learning transition from junior to senior in the high school English teaching.On the basis of new English Curriculum,constructivism theory and metacognition theory,the author makes a research using questionnaire on the present situation of English vocabulary learning of senior high school freshmen,senior high English teachers' consciousness of consistency in teaching and vocabulary teaching methods of junior and senior high school teachers.In the research,the author invites 21 senior high school English teachers,23 junior school English teachers and 221 Grade 1 senior students of Shaoyang No.6 Middle School.The author also adopts the observation method to discover the present situation of how teachers taught and how students learned English vocabulary in junior-senior transition period.After collecting,analyzing and discussing the questionnaire data and observation records,the author draws the following conclusion: on the one hand,teachers lack consciousness of consistency in English teaching,and they almost give no systematic guidance to students of vocabulary learning strategies;on the other hand,students find it difficult to adapt to senior high school English learning in a short time,and they are low in self-learning ability.Therefore,this thesis combines theory with teaching practice,and finally puts forward the corresponding countermeassures.During this transition period,teachers should take these measures: 1)strengthen the consciousness of consistency ofEnglish teaching,get acquainted with vocabulary teaching methods of junior teachers',and be familiar with the different requirements of English vocabluary of junior and senior high school students set down in the New Curriculum.2)improve students' self-ability of learning English vocabulary by means of cultivating students' metacognitive strategies and scientific vocabulary learning strategies.3)adopt a variety of vocabulary teaching methods,such as teaching English vocabulary under the guidance of systematization principle,communication principle,culture principle,cognition principle and affection principle.
