Vocabulary plays an important role in English learning.Vocabulary learning is a challenging task during the learning period in primary and secondary schools.Students face the following problems when learning vocabulary:(1)There are few ways for students to meet new words. The main approach includes the teacher and the textbook.Because teacher seldom uses new words in class, textbook has become the leading approach.(2)The chances for students to use the new words are not many.In the long run, students may lose the ability to master these words. Some of the fossilized usage of words reflects the occurrence of inter-language fossilization. Many researchers have put forward suggestions on how to avoid fossilization from the perspectives of teachers' and students'.Not many of them pay attention to the role of textbooks. This thesis, based on many theories such as language contact, analyzes the frequency and distribution of the repetition of new words in Oxford junior school textbooks of 7A and 7B.The thesis holds the point that a certain amount of repetition can guarantee the quality of vocabulary learning, and with the statistical analysis of the textbooks in concern, reaches a conclusion that fossilization may be caused by less repetition of new words.Research questions of this thesis include:(1)what is the frequency and distribution of new words in Oxford junior school textbook7 A,7B?(2)What is the frequency of repetition of new words in current unit, following unit, and exercise?(3)What can we do to revise the frequency and form of new words as well as the design of exercise? All the new words are analyzed, data about the frequency and distribution of repetition of new words are given. Conclusions are made as follows:(1)It is difficult for students to master the 70.21%new words in textbook.(2)Most of the new words appear in the part of exercise of vocabulary, oral and text comprehension.(3)The interval of new words is too long for students to meet with the new words.
