| The development of global technology has put forward new requirements for autonomous learning concept and ability. The English curriculum standard issued by the Ministry of education of China in 2001 clearly points out that it is one of the main objectives of English teaching to cultivate high school students’ autonomous English learning ability in English.Based on the reasons above, this study focuses on the status of the autonomous learning ability of high school students and the gender differences in autonomous English learning,in order to adopt corresponding teaching measures to promote students’ autonomous learning ability. In this study, the questionnaire “Student Autonomy Scale for Primary and Secondary School Students” was compiled by Professor Pang Weiguo from East China Normal University.332 students from No.3 high school in Yining city were investigated.Among these students, there were 166 boy students and 166 girl students, including 110 students in senior one,112 students in senior two and 110 students in senior three. Then 12 students from three grades in this school, who had finished the questionnaires, were interviewed.Among them, there were 2 boy students and 2 girl students in each grade. The research questions are as follows: 1.What is the overall level of the students’ autonomous English learning of a senior high school in Yining City? 2.Is there any difference in autonomous English learning between boy students and girl students in a senior high school? Through the SPSS19.0 professional data analysis software, the questionnaire data were sorted and analyzed, and the independent sample T test was conducted.By comparing the data of 7dimensions of autonomous learning between male and female students, the author got the following conclusions: First, the level of overall current situation of No.3 senior high school students’ autonomous English learning in Yining City is generally at an above average level.Second,in high school students’ autonomous English learning,in the seven dimensions(learning motivation, learning content, learning time, learning method, learning process, learning outcome and learning environment)the average score of girl students is slightly higher than that of boy students. In addition, there is a significant gender difference in the learning method dimension, while others are not.According to the results of the questionnaire, the author carried out an interview aiming at the reason of the significantdifference. The result of this study provide some implications for us:(1)Giving guidance in students’ autonomous learning.(2)Taking gender differences into account in English teaching. It would be better for the teachers to organize teaching according to the gender characteristics of students and teach students in accordance with their aptitude.(3)Creating harmonious learning environment for students in class and after class. |
