A Qualitative Study On The Problemof Spouse Selection Of Female Postgraduate Students

As a common and continual union between different individuals,marriage has extremely important effects to the social virtuous circle and harmonious development.More than the tie between individual and society,marriage is also the major way of forming a family,the basic unit of society.Spouse selection,known as the antecedent behavior of getting married,is the most popular attention focal point in the topic of marriage.Selecting spouse at an appropriate time and then forming a brand new family can promote the renewing and development of society.What's more,it regards social coordinate operation and harmonious development as well.There is a Chinese saying,"A boy of age should be married,so should a girl." This sentence indicates that in China,getting married of age is the requirement of the traditional culture.However,due to the limitation of social environment and individual factors,not everyone could select spouse without any hindrance.Especially the female postgraduate students encounter some problems when they are going to select spouse in recent years.Their problem has been more and more common which has set off an animated discussion in the public.In theory female could experience more freedom and have wider choices in spouse selection if their social status be promoted.However in China,the trends in marriage market is running counter to the theory.It means that to the female prominent intellectuals,the most highly educated meet the most difficulties when choosing spouse.The Reform and Opening brings tremendous benefits to Chinese women.They have more and more choices and time to accept education.The quantity and proportion of the female postgraduate students annually grows.While these female postgraduate students are placing in an embarrassing position in the marriage market.The education background doesn't push them to a higher status,on the contrary,become obstructed for the f postgraduate students.Although they obtain knowledge and rights by their hard working,they can't gain a sweet affection at the same time.As a female postgraduate student,I have seen some schoolfellow experience the problems in spouse selection.Choosing spouse is not only an individual action but also a social action.It regards personal happiness as well as the social harmony.So I decide to take research on the problem of spouse selection of female postgraduate students in Dalian.At present most postgraduate students are after 1980s or after 1990s.As the generation growing with the Reform and Opening,their sense of worth has inevitably portrayed this progress.The spouse choice idea reflects the impact of social change on human marriage.Studying the problem of spouse selection of female postgraduate students could help supplement the sociology theory.Morever,this study can also lead the female postgraduate students to build the healthy and positive spouse choice idea.This is a qualitative study.To complete this research,I have visited 4 universities in Dalian,choosing twelve female postgraduate students whose age is between 24-32 by purposive sample.In the course of analysis,I took the view of social gender theory to explain the difficulties in spouse selection.This is an innovation to this study.The thesis is divided into five parts.The first chapter is an introduction.It includes research background and significance of studying the problem of spouse selection for the spouse selection for female postgraduate students,the research methods and the logic of the context.The second chapter is the individual factors which limit the spouse selection for female postgraduate students,including the subjective factors and objective factor.The third chapter is the social factors which limit the spouse selection for female postgraduate students.I think the social factors could divided as three aspects:economical environment,social value and guide of media.The fourth chapter is the suggestion for solving the problems of spouse seletion.First,I forecast the trends of the spouse selection for female postgraduate students.Then try to offer some suggestions for the spouse selection for female postgraduate students to lead a positive spouse choice idear.The fifth chapter is the conclusion.First,summarizes and discusses about the thesis' conclusions,followed mainly from the shortcomings of research perspective,consider to extend.
