As the core of foundation,the council has important functions such as financing,supervision and strategic decision making.Improving organizational performance by improving the governance structure of the council and optimizing the characteristics of the board has always been a research topic for academics.According to the foundation’s highly dependence on the characteristics of external resources,the directors with different professional backgrounds have various knowledge,information,experience,and resources,so there will also be a difference in the performance of the foundation’s organizational performance.This paper has chosen 217 foundations as examples,using the resource dependence theory,Social generalization theory and information decision theory as theoretical basis,and selecting the three indicators of organizational performance,to analyze the influence of directors’ professional backgrounds on organizational performance comprehensively.The research has showed as follows:firstly,the directors with media and enterprise background have a significant influence on organizational performance.Secondly,the diversity of the professional backgrounds of the directors has a significant impact on the foundation’s funding capacity and public support.Thirdly,chairman of the council or secretary-general with a",multi-career" background has a significant impact on the foundation’s funding capacity and public support.Finally,different types of foundations present different patterns in terms of the influence induced by the diversity of directors’ professional backgrounds.To improve the organizational performance,the foundation should do something as follows:Firstly,increase the diversity of the professional background of directors.Secondly,regulate the behavior of directors with political background.Avoid negative behaviors such as power rent-seeking and interest transmission,the strengthening of talent exchange between the foundation and the government can enhance the legitimacy of the organization.Thirdly,envisage the usage of directors with financial background.These directors can achieve the preservation and appreciation of funds through scientific investment management.Fourthly,enhance the status of directors with media background as such directors can expand the foundations social influence by using the positive reports.Finally,pay attention to the directors with business background as their advanced management experience can improve organizational efficiency.
