ObjectiveTo investigate status quo of undergraduate nursing students’transcultural self-efficacy and caring ability. And to explore effects of transcultural nursing interventions including cultural lecture,5-min cultural sharing and cultural practice on their transcultural self-efficacy and caring ability so as to provide references for their education.MethodsAt the beginning of the 5th semester(on September 1st,2015)a total of394 undergraduate nursing students from a university in Hengyang were chosen by cluster sampling and investigated by using a general information questionnaire,Transcultural Self-efficacy Tool(CV-TSET)and Caring Ability Inventory(CAI).And among them 170 undergraduate nursing students enrolled in 2013 were selected by cluster sampling and randomly divided into two groups by the lottery method.91 students of control group received planed education in the 5th semester(from September 2015 to Jan 2016),while79 students of experimental group were given one-semester transcultural nursing interventions including cultural lecture,5-min cultural sharing and cultural practice on the basis of planed education. All students were investigated by the CV-TSET and CAI at the end of the 5th semester.Collected data was analyzed by using SPSS in version of 18.0.Statistical methods included descriptive statistics,t test and chi-square test. And a P value less than 0.05 was considered as statistically significant.Results1 Status quo of undergraduate nursing students’transcultural self-efficacyTotal mean score of CV-TSET was(6.09±0.95)and it was in a medium level.2 Status quo of undergraduate nursing students’caring abilityTotal mean score of CAI was(4.78±0.58)and it was in a low level.3 Before intervention, general information, total mean scores of CV-TSET and CAI and transcultural self-efficacy level of undergraduate nursing students in the control and experimental group all showed no statistically difference(P>0.05).4 Effect of transcultural nursing interventions on undergraduate nursing students’transcultural self-efficacyAt the end of the 5th semester, total mean score of CV-TSET,mean scores of cognitive dimension, affective dimension and practical dimension in the control group all showed no statistically difference compared with those at the beginning of the 5th semester(P>0.05);total mean score of CV-TSET,mean scores of cognitive dimension, affective dimension and practical dimension in the experimental group were all higher than those at the beginning of the 5th semester and those in the control group(P<0.05).After interventions, the percentages of undergraduate nursing students’low transcultural self-efficacy in the experimental group was lower than those at the beginning of the 5th semester and the percentages of undergraduate nursing students’medium transcultural self-efficacy in the experimental group was higher than those at the beginning of the 5th semester.5 Effect of transcultural nursing interventions on undergraduate nursing students’caring abilityAt the end of the 5th semester, total mean score of CAI,mean scores of knowing dimension, patience dimension and courage dimension in the control group all showed no statistically difference compared with those at the beginning of the 5th semester(P>0.05);total mean score of CAI,mean scores of knowing dimension, patience dimension and courage dimension in the experimental group were all higher than those at the beginning of the 5th semester(P<0.05)and those in the control group(P<0.05).Conclusion1 Undergraduate nursing students’overall transcultural self-efficacy was in a medium level.2 Undergraduate nursing students’overall caring ability was in a low level.3 Transcultural nursing interventions of cultural lecture,5-min cultural sharing and cultural practice helped undergraduate nursing students enhance their transcultural nursing self-efficacy and caring ability. |
