Secondary education,in the setting of an economically open China, requires a global perspective.Traditional Chinese education and Chinese texts cannot adapt to the changes brought on by expanding globalization. The Chinese language and culture education for the increasing numbers of international students should be tailored to target three different groups:foreign secondary school students abroad, foreign students in the international departments of Chinese secondary schools, and foreign students in International secondary schools in China. In this situation, the teaching of cultural elements is essential. It has therefore become very important to examine and compare cultural education materials from a cross cultural perspective. This thesis is divided into four chapters. The principal parts of this thesis is from the second chapter to the fourth chapter. This thesis mainly serves as a comparison between Chinese Culture and Chinese Language and Culture.Firstly, while analyzing the organization of cultural content in these two texts, many differences are apparent, including the background of the writing, the selection of cultural content and the cultural teaching method. The most important of these differences is that Chinese Culture uses a traditional cultural teaching style while Chinese Language and Culture uses a cross-cultural teaching style. In addition, this thesis analyzes the complimentary nature between the classical cultural content and static relevance of Chinese Culture and the modern cultural content and contemporary relevance of Chinese Language and Culture. It points out that the reason for this complimentary nature is that these two books have different regional backgrounds and satisfy different cultural education demands. Finally, this thesis proposes that the assessment of teaching materials should be approached from a cross cultural perspective. The relationship between language education and cultural education should be accurately determined, and the specific needs of the students should be clearly identified. The text books chosen should be able to adapt to students with different backgrounds and proficiencies. Thus, the adaptability of a text material lies in its pertinence and broad range applicability.
