With the rapid development of the society and economy,the international status of China has increased greatly.English education has become more and more popular,and the importance of it is well recognized the whole society.With the deepening of the implementing of Basic Education Curriculum Reform in our country,primary schools English education has changed fundamentally.However,the primary English teaching situations between developing regions and less developed regions are unbalanced.Take Labin as an example,due to the gap of the teaching resources around cities,English teaching in some poor areas can’t get corresponding attention.In the primary schools in Laibin,all students from grade three have English course since 2002,but according to the relevant researches,the situation is not optimistic.As is known,the classroom is the main field of teaching;to improve the effectiveness of classroom teaching is very important for the improvement of teaching quality.Teachers’ classroom teaching includes pre-class teaching,while-class teaching and after-class teaching.Therefore,in order to improve the primary schools’ English teaching quality and promote the overall level of the primary schools’ English Education by enabling teachers to teach effectively in class and allowing pupils to learn English reasonably and strategically,conducting the research on the classroom English teaching of primary schools in Laibin is of practical important.In order to investigate the existing situation of the primary schools’ classroom English teaching in Laibin,the author conducted questionnaires and interviews to 58 English teachers from Laibin urban primary schools.The content of the questionnaire involves those of pre-class teaching,while-class teaching,and after-class teaching.The purpose of the questionnaires and interviews is to answer:(1)What’s the general situation of the Classroom English Teaching of Primary Schools in Laibin?(2)What are the factors that influence the Classroom English Teaching of Primary Schools in Laibin?(3)According to the current situation of Classroom English Teaching of Primary Schools in Laibin,what are the reasonable advice and suggestions?The research results show that:The current situation of classroom English teaching in Laibin primary schools is not optimistic and is worrying.(1)Laibin is seriously short of qualified teachers;Even so,among the 58 primary schools’ English teachers,most of them are just diplomas;and their technical titles are all below high technical ones;also,in the primary schools,extra large-sized classes are prevalent;the average numbers of students in the class are more than 70.Furthermore,even for the 58 English teachers,nearly half of them are midway transferred teachers,and their teaching period is less than 5 years.What’s more,91.4%of them are women teachers,which will affect the students’ personality development to a certain extent.(2)In classroom English teaching,the existing problems also cannot be ignored.(a)In pre-class teaching activities,the English teachers of primary schools cannot well understand the new curriculum standards of primary English,unable to design the teaching contents according to the students’ actuality;(b)While in class,more than half of the teachers can’t pronounce English correctly;although more than 80%of teachers realize the importance of cultivating students’ interests in English,nearly half of them can’t stimulate students’ English learning interests,and they feel it is difficult to design appropriate teaching methods,which showing a tendency that the spirit is willing,but the flesh is week;(c)As far as the class teaching activities are concerned,one of the biggest problems for the primary schools’ English teachers is that they are not sure whether they should assign and check homework or not,or whether they should redesign the teaching activities based on the teaching reflection and so on,which reflects they are helpless.Therefore,in order to change the current situation of classroom English teaching of primary schools in Laibin and improve the English teaching quality,the author puts forward to the following suggestions:(1)For the educational departments,in accordance with the relevant provisions,they must make effort to cope with large-sized classes,and strictly control the student’s numbers in average class(recommended 45students/class);(2)For schools,they should constantly improve the English teachers’ professional development;(3)For primary schools’ English teachers,in classroom teachings,they should adopt task-based language teaching method and teach effectively in the limited 35 minutes;(4)For pupils,they should cultivate good learning habits,evoke learning interests,and realize the importance of learning English.
