Animated pedagogical agent(APA)is a kind of personification or cartoon image which is presented on the computer screen. In the learning environment, the APA can be used as an expert, assistant, companion or other roles to provide auxiliary supports for the learner's learning. The APA not only has functions such as demonstrating teaching models, supplying teaching guidance, providing educational resources, testing, etc.,but also has emotional roles, including: guiding attention,as emotional companionship and affecting learner's motivation, which are different from other teaching tools. There are some points after dealing with the existing literatures. The empirical studies of APAs' effects on learners' learning achievement and learning motivation are not unanimous. And empirical studies on APAs in our country are rare. The effects of APAs on local learning and domestic learners are still necessary to be explored.More importantly, researchers are beginning to pay more attention to the balance between the cost of production and the actual effects of APAs.The form and function of the APA directly determine the cost of production. Therefore, aiming at solving the following two questions, this study investigates the effects of different forms of APAs on the learning and motivation of students of grade seven in China: 1)Whether the APA has effects on students' academic achievement and learning motivation 2)Is there any difference between the dynamic APA and the static APA on students' academic achievement and learning motivation? Then provide a reference for the image design of APAs.To answer the above questions, this study designs a questionnaire survey and two repeated experiments to test roles and effects of APAs in the process of learning mathematics procedural knowledge of students of grade seven. The first experiment designs with static and dynamic APAs as the research object, with mathematics procedural knowledge as the learning contents, with students of grade seven as the learners to explore the influence of the APA on learning achievement, learning motivation and learning attitude of the students' mathematical procedural knowledge,as well as the differences between the two forms of APAs.The second experiment as the repeated experiment to verify the validity of the first experiment and to test whether the differences between the dynamic APA and the static APA exist for a long time. Two experiments show: 1)The APA has a continued positive impact on learners' academic achievement;2)The APA has no significant effect on the learners' learning motivation;3)The effect of the dynamic APA and the static APA on students' learning is no difference in the multiple experiments;4)Compared with the non APA group, the two groups with APAs show a more positive evaluation, and there is no difference between the two groups. This study verifies the effectiveness of the APA,and finds that the effects of two forms of APAs are basically same.Considering the principle of cost and effectiveness, static APAs have priority to be designed and developed.Ultimately, this study reflects the deficiencies in the process of design and implementation, and puts forward to future researches.
